Watering New Trees, Shrubs, and Perennials:
Plants are living and require care! Plants need consistent watering to grow and thrive.
Trees, Shrubs, and Perennials can take up to three (3) years to become established so continue to water even after the first season especially during hot, dry periods.
-Water by hand with a slow running hose. Avoid using a lawn sprinkler to water your plants. Water the roots of the plant, not the leaves.
-Water perennials and ground covers enough to moisten the top 2" of soil.
Even though it rained does not mean your plants received enough water. The foliage on plants can prevent water from reaching the roots and rainfall amounts may not be sufficient. Check the soil by your plants--if it's dry--WATER!
The following watering schedule should be followed:
Week 1: Water three (3) times per week
Weeks 2 and 3: Water two (2) times per week
Week 4: Water once a week for the rest of the year. This may need to be increased during dry periods.
Plants need good watering even into late November.
How much to water your plants?
-Trees 1-2" trunk diameter: 10 gal. each time or approximately 20 minutes on slow trickle.
-Shrubs 12-36": 5 gal. each time. Approximately 10 minutes on slow trickle.
-Perennials: 2.5 gal. each time.
Seeding or Overseeding:
-Keep the top 1/4-1/2" of the seedbed moist until new seedlings are up.
-Once grass is up and seedlings are 1-2" high, water every other day depending on weather. Allow surface to dry between waterings.
-After grass is established, increase length of watering time for greater soil moisture depth. This encourages grass to form a deeper root system.
-Avoid watering late in the evening or setting automatic irrigation systems on night watering to avoid foliar diseases. Water in early morning so the sun dries the grass blades preventing fungal spores from germinating.
Do not mow newly seeded or overseeded areas for at least two days after installation.
-Watering sod is very critical. Watering is necessary until the root system is established usually one full summer. Be sure ALL areas of the sodded lawn receive water. This may mean buying additional hoses so the water reaches the far corners of your lawn, AND moving the sprinkler around the lawn to ensure all sodded areas are reached.
The following watering schedule is recommended:
Week 1: Water sod every day to the point it is fully saturated.
Week 2: Water on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.
Week 3: Water on Monday and Thursday.
Week 4: Continue to water sod twice a week for the rest of the season.
-Do not mow sod for at least two days after installation.
